ASHA
a Heart Centre
Alchemy School of Healing Arts - ASHA - is a retreat and community centre located just outside Castell’Azzara, a medieval village in Southern Tuscany. ASHA was born as a result of the long-established Alchemy of Breath online community seeking a way to meet in person.
It is the beautiful manifestation of a 10-year search for the ideal place to plant a seed for a new vision to grow. Of course,“ideal’ is a very ambitious word, and one of our first learnings has been that to catalyse a gathering of people in a physical location is very different than doing so online! Nonetheless, the seed has been planted, the learnings have been many, and the first sprouts can now be seen.
Fortunately, as Alchemy has chosen ASHA as a location to host its retreats, many people will be introduced to the area’s beauty that has remained largely undiscovered. Most people consider Florence and Chianti as the heart of Tuscany. Castell’Azzara is very different, untouched by many aspects of modern life. It has been spared the degradation of mass tourism, the land remains pristine, the water is clean, and the fresh, clean air is to be savoured.
Our purpose is to host members of Alchemy’s online community, as well as other individuals and communities who share similar values, to this exquisite part of the world - either to visit, to hold beautiful events and retreats, or to consider joining our initiative to integrate with the local community respectfully, to appreciate their folkloristic wisdom, and to support the regeneration of the area as a whole.
Our Story & Founders
Anthony Abbagnano and Amy Rachelle met in 2010 in Bali at Anthony’s house that was located in an eco-village, in Padingbai. Though they both lived in Ubud most of the time, 50 meters from each other, they had yet to cross paths until one beautiful day… Amy will never forget the first time she saw Anthony. Very tan, long gray hair, and wearing a sarong at the pool cafe - she thought he looked mystical and magical. It was a different type of love at first sight… an intrigue, and perhaps even a spiritual love. Like a compelling force you have to come closer to that magnetizes you to meet what calls. Quickly Amy became Anthony’s therapist (naturopath) for the next year, helping him to repair his gut health and listen to his body. For the next four years they became the best of friends, after deep therapeutic emotional and physical work in the first year. They had great fun traveling together, watching movies, walking the dog the eventually came to share - Luna - and enjoyed deep philosophical conversations about life, love, and what it all means in the bigger picture. A strong foundation of friendship formed the bonds that would eventually not only help them thrive as a couple, yet also in business, and building community… as little did they know, there would be many storms to come, challenges to met, and obstacles to overcome. Anthony’s near-death experience on Bali from parasites was easily recognized by Amy, and with proper treatment under her care and a parasite specialist (who has since passed), they left Bali. It wasn’t easy to leave, Anthony has just started Alchemy of Breath, based on Ubud’s first plant-based cafe called Alchemy. And Amy had a thriving 10-year retreat business with her raw food and detox retreats. Plus they had started The Ark Bali, their first retreat center together. They had built a strong live platform by 2013, and it wasn’t easy to leave it, as it meant starting over again. Though, with Anthony’s health suffering in Bali, they left for Europe, and lived in Ibiza, Spain for 2 years. Visions of bringing their students together, having a place with clean air, water, and soil was very alive for them. As their students asked for it over and over again, it became a big part of their mission to create a land-based school for breathwork and holistic studies. At their cliff top cottage surrounded by sea in an isolated part of the Northern tip of Ibiza where they lived off grid - catching rain water, and living from solar panels, Anthony decided to start breathwork online. Once again, ahead of the curve and a pioneer, he became responsible for breathwork being accessible to the world. And with great success. After searching over 70 properties in many countries, they found an abandoned retreat center in the southern part of Tuscany that fit their first criteria: clean air, clean water (with lots of it), and clean soil - far away from cities. They figured if things got unlivable in the outer world, they could help contribute to community with getting back to basics. It had always been one of their dreams. The second part to this dream was a place where their online community could come, afford housing in the lowly populated nearby town, and where they could grow food, learn how to farm, and become a holistic center. ASHA was born as a result of Anthony and Amy’s love and common vision and values. 1 month after they bought the property in 2020, the first lock down hit. They were very happy to have listened to their hearts and take the leap of faith to embark on such a project where no tourism exists, and where few foreigners live. With Alchemy of Breath and ASHA they’ve had their hearts and hands very full since 2020. Sometimes they call it a wing and a prayer, as they aren’t millionaires, just passionate people who believe in the Greater Good we are collectively a part of it, and putting their resources into what they believe in. It sure has taken a bus load of faith to get by at many stages of this grand experiment, and they are very happy to be fully immersed in their dreams while they call in community who share a common vision, who have the knowledge, love, and resources to continue to fuel these projects that supports many people now. They continue to guide the mission they serve, build community, write, sing, dance, and share love with many beautiful souls from students to team, to community members, and friends. When they ask themselves what else they could be doing with their lives other than serving and being guardians of land (ASHA’s 15 hectares/37 acres), contributing and receiving healing in community, while continuously answering the call to serve… the only thing that comes is to continue to add healthy doses of fun and play into the mix, while enjoying all the beauty, magic, and love that is between them - and that they have for people, plants, animals - and humanity - in all its forms.
"How is alignment to what you came here to do, calling you, from the inside out?"
